Torvill & Dean and Wiegman recognised in New Year Honours
Ice skating legends Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, along with Netherlands women’s national football team coach Sarina Wiegman, have been recognised in the New Year Honours list for their outstanding contributions to their respective sports.
Torvill & Dean, who famously won gold at the 1984 Winter Olympics with their iconic performance to Ravel’s Bolero, have been awarded OBEs for their services to ice skating and charity work. The duo have continued to inspire generations of skaters with their grace and skill on the ice.
Meanwhile, Wiegman, who guided the Dutch team to victory at the 2017 UEFA Women’s Euro and a runner-up finish at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, has been honoured with an MBE for her significant achievements in women’s football. Under her leadership, the Netherlands has emerged as a powerhouse in the sport.
